VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the backbone of NSVS, with approximately 300 volunteers contributing 5,400 hours per year. Volunteers work sessions at the Centre and/or the one-to-one Outreach Program.

ONE-TO-ONE OUTREACH PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS

Our One-To-One Outreach Program (1-2-1) is designed for “Super Seniors” (generally aged 80+) who still live independently in their own homes. Volunteers are carefully matched with senior clients in their area to ensure compatibility. Volunteers are expected to commit to approximately 2 hours/week for at least 6 months. Volunteers provide: companionship by visiting Seniors in their homes, sharing conversation, having tea, playing games and cards, or simply socialising; access to the community by taking Seniors for walks, helping them with shopping and appointments; and consistency in a Senior’s life through regular weekly visits. If you enjoy the company of seniors and are able to commit approximately two hours a week with a senior in your community, please email us at volunteers@nsvs.ca.

ONE-TO-ONE OUTREACH VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

All one-to-One Outreach Volunteers must be 18 years old, complete a criminal record check and provide two references.  A warm, non-judgemental personality, with openness to different beliefs, customs, cultures and lifestyles is essential.  Volunteers may be resourceful, self-motivated, reliable, patient, and emotionally mature. Volunteers also require good social, language and listening skills, and an ability to focus on the Senior Client’s needs.

DROP-IN CENTRE VOLUNTEERS

Our Drop-In Centre Volunteers greet clients, prepare and serve lunch and tea, clean up and even join in a game or two of bingo, bridge or scrabble!. Lunch volunteers typically help out from 11:30-1:30 and afternoon tea volunteers help from 2:00-3:00.We also have volunteer help at our special and seasonal events.

Please call our offices or email us to find out more information.

TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS

As a result of a generous grant received from the North Vancouver Community Foundation, we have resources available to equip volunteers working with seniors.

As well, we have a “Volunteer Handbook” available.
